Ten Mottos to Live by in 2016

Today marks ten days into the new year, and these few days have given me time to reflect on things that have inspired and molded me to be who I am today, and the things have nudged me along to create Inspired by Nick.

I told myself that this year, instead of setting resolutions, which are more often than not unreasonable, unattainable and just plain un-kept, that I would live by ten mottos, ten ways to go about life differently. They’re ten things that we could all benefit from reminding ourselves of from time to time.

Self-improvement is often thought of synonymously with shifting behaviours, and I recently read somewhere that it’s said to take seven years to master a skill. How can we expect ourselves to one day (January 1st) flip a switch and be this entirely new person.

“A new year, a new me!” Sound familiar? Sure, self-improvement is always a positive change, but it almost always takes time. We can only start to change ourselves for the better in small steps. Day by day, in learning from our mistakes.

Every year is the same, we’ll be better at our jobs, more patient with our families and more receptive to new ideas. We’ll eat healthier, we’ll work out more and get in killer shape. And while all of those are valid in their own ways, this year I decided to shift gears.

Instead of listing out all of the things I’m unsatisfied with, I decided to list out concrete things or actions that I can take every single day to be a better person. I’m making an active effort to engrain them in my daily thoughts and actions.

When I started Inspired By Nick, my goal was simply to inspire others.

I thought that somehow, by sharing things that I had learned, or things that had inspired me, that I would be able to influence positive change in others and inspire them, too.

So today I’m sharing with you, ten mottos that I told myself I would live by, each and every day this year, in my attempt at self-improvement.

1. Life is what we make of it.

2. Be nicer to others than what’s required of us.

3. We only stress if we let ourselves stress.

4. Hard work DOES pay off.

5. Be the change that you want to see in the world.

6. Do things that make you FEEL good.

7. Pay it forward – do a nice deed for someone every day.

8. The best things in life ARE free.

9. Work hard to earn WHAT you’ve been dreaming about.

10. The materialistic things don’t matter. The things that bring you inner joy, do.

Grocery shopping but 'leveled up' 💁🏻‍♂️🍄 y’all know that food shopping is basically my favourite hobby 😂. I always start in produce (naturally) and then jump straight to organic aisles for my fav snacks. Using the green labels in-store, I can identify (at a quick glance) which products are plant-based, vegan, or gluten-free. When you’re craving a burger but you also want a When you’re craving a burger but you also want a #meatless option 🙌🏼🍔 Organic Black Bean Fiesta Burgers made by yours truly 🍔💁🏻‍♂️when I was vegan I really had to get creative with a lot of my recipes, otherwise I’d be eating the same old bean salad every day… and bean salad doesn’t really taste like a burger when you’re craving a burger! Even though I’m not fully vegan anymore, I do still like to swap out meat as much as possible with other #plantbased options because that’s what works for me!

At-home yoga for the winnn! 🧘🏻‍♂️🌿✨ because even though supporting my local yoga studio looks different now than in the past (classes are all online or through their app), I can still feel good about being a paying member and doing a small part to #supportlocal.

I am not THE poster child for supporting local, that’s just the truth, but I do what I can, where I can. Honestly, I do miss being in the hot studio where after a class I would be drenched and feeling so accomplished, ironically though, I’m surprisingly still drenched after a 90 min class at home, more so than I thought I would be! So I still feel good about getting my workout in, even if it’s different than being there in person.

Anyone who does yoga regularly like me knows a wet bag is essential after a good flow. The team at @forwardwithdesign have this awesome bag (I link to it in my stories) that I love--it’s super practical and I love the cute print! While I’m not getting as much use out of it as I’d like right now, it will definitely be coming with me to the studio when some of our restrictions lift and small businesses open up again!!
